Preschool Programs

Our five preschool classrooms are set up to foster optimum academic, social, emotional and physical growth specifically for children from 3-5 yrs. old. In addition to the Montessori curriculum, each class encourages children’s innate curiosity and excitement about learning through weekly foreign language and music instruction led by specialty teachers.

The focus on developing each child’s exceptional and distinct set of gifts creates a non-competitive, cooperative classroom environment. Our central goal is to foster responsible citizens through multi-culture studies, social awareness and a respect for all living things.

The Practical Life and Sensorial sections of each TLC classroom form the foundation of the Montessori Method, with information and materials set out in sequential order from easiest to most difficult.

Practical Life

With the goal of forming impressions and developing reliable lifelong habits, the Practical Life curriculum centers on learning to use careful movements for routine activities. Children practice pouring, folding, scooping, squeezing, basting, tong transfer tweezing, sorting, pairing, personal care, care of the environment, and food preparation.

Sensorial

Designed to awaken all the senses, materials in the Sensorial area teach children about the use of shape, color, dimension, texture, taste, smell, hearing, measurement, comparisons, weight, units, temperature, shape pairing, and solids.

Math

The study of math uses Montessori manipulative materials that help your child progress from concrete to abstract concepts in a natural, easy-to-understand process.

Language

Featuring both spoken and written exercises, language studies begin with auditory training that helps children successfully blend sounds into words. The Montessori approach incorporates both phonetic and whole-word strategies that help each child develop and master language skills through the continual introduction and repetitious use of the Montessori language materials.

Cultural Studies

The cultural area of our Montessori classroom includes geography, history, botany, zoology, science, art, foreign language, and music. The study of the sciences at the preschool level encourages your child’s natural curiosity and engenders a lasting interest in discovering the truth about our fascinating world. In these studies, children learn to analyze, hypothesize, critique, investigate, discover and create. They begin exploring similarities between their culture and others, developing a global awareness, appreciation, and respect for differences.

Music

Our music program engages all the children in singing, listening, and playing instruments. Fun activities are designed to promote expressive music-making and development of a musical vocabulary. Your child learns a variety of musical elements, such as pitch, tempo, dynamics, duration, and timbre, which are built into singing games, multicultural action songs, and movements. Our popular winter and spring all-school concerts enable the children to demonstrate what they’ve learned as they entertain their parents and other members of the TLC community.

Movement

All of TLC Montessori’s students participate in organized physical activities in small group settings each week. The activities are designed to develop small and large muscle groups, coordination, listening skills, teamwork, and self-confidence.

Foreign Language

Our foreign language program provides children at all levels with the opportunity to speak, listen, and learn enough Spanish to engage in simple conversations. Our weekly foreign language class introduces words and phrases used in everyday life, such as numbers, riddles, poems, and songs.
